Hi all -- I saw some great drafts today -- good work! On Monday, bring a copy of your draft in whatever shape it's in. I encourage you to put it away for a little while, and then do a little editing later in the weekend. Print out a copy of whatever you've got for class on Monday.
I've made comments on some people's drafts so far, and please note that when I underline or make check marks, that's my way of saying "good job!" or "nice idea!".
If you didn't have a draft today and want me to look at your draft on Monday, please do so. I won't have as much time to review (final drafts are due Weds), but I can give you a little feedback.
Have a good weekend and see you in class!

Homework for Friday
Hi all -- Some wonderful outlines and drafts today! Thanks to those who shared information on if you are stuck or struggling, or just a bit behind. If that is you, I hope you'll come to see me during my office hour (Friday 10-10:50) or at least send me a note letting me know if you want further help.
For Friday, bring 2 copies of your essay to class (we meet in the lab). Please make sure to do this -- one is for your peer, and one is for me to give you feedback on.
In addition, if you are willing to share a paragraph or two with the class (and this can be done with or without the class knowing it's yours) please let me know! We can look at the paragraph in the lab on Friday before or after peer review.
Finally, remember that peer review is important. If you miss it, your final paper grade goes down. (This is noted on the essay assignment and is also on the syllabus.) Please take advantage of this opportunity to have the feedback of a peer and me as well. You can also use it as an opportunity to go to the lab sometime for extra credit!
Good luck and see you Monday.

Homework for Wednesday
Hi all -- Good work coming up with main ideas and responses today -- lots of thoughtful ideas.
For Wednesday, find quotes for your additional body paragraphs, and add them to page 7 in your packet.
Then create your outline! (Even if you have already done this (good job!), please add your quotes to the existing outline.) We'll do some in-class writing on Wednesday.
Feel free to email with any questions, and please remember that my office hour is now Friday 10-10:50 instead of on Wednesday.

Homework for Monday
Hi all -- Great job creating these main ideas. I've posted them all below.
For homework, fill in page 6 (handwritten is ok) in your packet, reflecting further on what you believe Carol Dweck's main idea is. If she' s writing this for teachers, what does she want them to know? What does she want students to know? I recommend you re-read the introduction and conclusion of the essay, too, as she is writes directly about this. Then, fill in your response, too. What do you think about all this so far?
Then, type your outline, using pg 8 in the packet as your guide. You have the topic sentences for each section below (and I've added which paragraph each section will be, but maybe you've already figured that part out). Now your job is to fill in the thesis and support for each section. What are the supporting ideas in each section? Refer to pgs 25-29 if you need help, or feel free to email me.
Please also bring in TWO copies of your outline - one for me and one for you to use in class.
We didn't get to talk about all this, so do the best you can.
Paragraph 1:
Fixed or Malleable: Students typically have two different mindsets, fixed or growth. Based on research, our brain develops and our intelligence requires effort and is not fixed.

Paragraph 3:
Effects of Praise: Praising students intelligence gives them a short burst of pride, followed by a long stride of negative consequences. Praise of intelligence can lead to a loss in confidence and also lead to a fixed mindset.

Motivated to Learn: They performed interventions on fixed-mindset students to help them achieve a growth-mindset and help build a constant confidence.
OFFICE HOURS: Please note that I will be changing my office hours from Weds to Friday starting next week. I'll be available 10-10:50 on Fridays in my office, DON 366.

Homework for Wednesday
Hi all -- Good job digging in to the text today! You shared some important ideas. Keep it up, and fill in the chart in your packet. Make sure to write something in each box...even if you have to write that you're confused! Remember that annotating means keeping track of what you do understand and what you don't understand!
We'll continue to look at the reading and break it down a bit more on Wednesday.

Weekend homework!
For homework, read the full essay started in class, "The Perils and Promises of Praise." Good job with annotating so far! Keep it up by keeping track of your reactions and questions, and anything that you find confusing. Use the worksheet if you need help with annotating. The fill in the "Gathering Ideas" chart handed out in class.
See you Monday!

Homework for Friday
Hi all -- Thanks for your ideas and insight today! This is a good start to the semester!
For homework, read in our textbook, Read, Write, Connect, pgs 3-6, and 14-16. Please also answer the questions on page 4 (in your notebook; no need to print).
This reading discusses pre-reading and annotating; you do not need to read the essay yet (pgs 6-12) but feel free to skim or read it through once if you'd like. We will talk about and practice more annotation on Friday, so if you don't get it yet, don't worry!

Weekend homework!
Hi all -- For the weekend, please complete the Educational Autobiography handed out in class; respond to page 1 only. Answer each of the bulleted points on page 1, and aim for about 2-3 pages using MLA format (double-spaced, 12-pt Times New Roman font).
(Please note that when it says, "Can your answers to these questions be explained by the theories of (insert author of first course text here)" you can ignore that part!)
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
For information on computer labs and printing at HCC, click here
Also, there is a group on campus called MERC (also called "Students helping Students"), and they can help you with issues and questions you have about using computers. Click here for more information on MERC. The best way to contact them is by email on their contact page.
